FARMAN SALMANOV: “I AM NOT PROMETHEUS, I AM A GEOLOGIST”

FARMAN SALMANOV: “I AM NOT PROMETHEUS, I AM A GEOLOGIST”

This year we celebrate the anniversary of a legendary geologist, the discoverer of the West-Siberian oil and gas fields, Farman Salmanov.

The life of this outstanding man could stand as a manual of belief in self and the work to which one devotes one’s life. From early childhood, Salmanov held to his objective despite the many obstacles.  He was literally self-made, because there was no one to help him. Firmness of character, a belief in fairness and amazing intuition helped him to achieve the goals he set and remain forever in the memory of millions of his compatriots and Russians as ‘the man who discovered Tyumen’s oil’.

The main scientific activity of the outstanding Azerbaijani chemist Yusif Heydar Mammadaliyev (1905-1961) took place in the formidable wartime and heavily militarized post-war years. The development of petro-chemistry in Azerbaijan continued intensively during the Second World War, when the oil industry had to be quickly rebuilt on a war footing. This led to the oil economy of the country becoming an important base for the entire Soviet front due to the high-quality fuels and lubricants produced there, and the Baku petroleum engineering factories began to produce mainly military products.
