Oil cities of the world: Stavanger

Stavanger is rightfully considered to be Norway’s most beautiful city. It is located on a peninsula on the shores of the North Sea at the entrance to Bokna-Fjord bay.  Between the sea on one side and fjords on the other, Stavanger is some 300 km from the Norwegian capital. Its population is about 120,000, the fourth highest in the country. In 872 a most significant military conflict (the Battle of Hafrsfjord), which led to the formation of the Norwegian state, took place on this site. The “Swords in the Rock” monument stands in commemoration of that event.
